“Career highlight for sure,” Pat Cummins on beating India in World Cup final; says his captaincy getting better with every game

Cummins has led Australia to WTC title and World Cup title this year.

Pat Cummins | GettyPat Cummins has tasted some great success in his brief stint as Australian cricket captain so far. Under his leadership, the Aussies won the World Test Championship (WTC) final and retained the Ashes on English soil earlier this year.

His ultimate achievement came last week as he captained Australia to their record-extending sixth World Cup title.

Before the World Cup, Cummins had captained Australia in just two ODI matches. Therefore, many have questioned his prowess as a white-ball skipper. His leadership further came under the scanner when Australia lost the first two games of their World Cup campaign.

However, Cummins silenced his critics by leading Australia to nine successive victories, including the title-clinching win against the rampaging Indian team in Ahmedabad.

His captaincy in the final was lauded by cricket pundits as he was able to restrain a free-scoring Indian side and also claimed the prize scalp of Virat Kohli.

Speaking after bringing the World Cup trophy to the iconic SCG on Tuesday (November 28), Pat Cummins said that the final win over India was a career highlight for him. He further stated that his captaincy is getting better every game.

“Still on a high, still waking up every morning buzzing. It’s a career highlight for sure,” said Cummins.

“I definitely get better with captaincy every game, absolutely."

“You learn so much in your wins, and even more so in your losses. No doubt I’m getting better.”

Cummins, who was accompanied by fellow pacer Mitchell Starc at the event, made it clear that they won’t take rest for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan.

“The words ‘rested’ and ‘rotated’ get thrown around a lot, but you never miss Test cricket fully fit,” Cummins said.

“Whilst the last couple of years we might’ve been rested from the odd game, the bulk of work we’ve been able to do is because of those smaller gaps. We’re fully fit. We won’t be rested.”
