Australia won the Cricket World Cup for the sixth time | GettyThe 2023 edition of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup came to an end on Sunday (November 19), with Australia defeating India in the final by six wickets to lift the coveted trophy for the record-extending sixth time.

India were the most dominant side in the showpiece tournament, reaching the final without losing a match. However, Rohit Sharma’s men were completely outplayed by the Aussies in the summit clash.

After the heartbreaking loss, veteran India off-spinner R Ashwin took to social media platform ‘X’ and hailed the Australian team as the giants of modern day cricket.

In his post, Ashwin highlighted the significant contributions of his teammates Virat Kohli, Mohammad Shami, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah throughout the tournament.

“Mighty mighty heartbreak last night. Everyone in the team had several days to remember during this campaign and special mentions to @imVkohli @MdShami11 @ImRo45 and @Jaspritbumrah93,” Ashwin wrote.

He added, “However I can’t help but applaud the giants of modern day cricket “Australia”. What they did on the field yesterday was just unbelievable. Congrats on their 6th World Cup win.”

Coming to the final match, Indian batters failed to get going on a slow pitch and managed to post only 240/10 in 50 overs after being asked to bat first.

In reply, Australia were in a spot of bother at 47/3 but the duo of Travis Head (137 off 120) and Marnus Labuschagne (58* off 110) added 192 runs for the fourth wicket to seal the chase in 43 overs.
