CWC 2023: “India favorites but Australians can never be written off,” Sunil Gavaskar ahead of World Cup final in Ahmedabad

India and Australia will square off in the World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad on November 19.

The journey of both teams to the final has been quite different. While the Rohit Sharma-led side is yet to lose a match in the competition, Australia started their campaign with two successive defeats before registering eight wins on the trot to make it to the grand finale.

Ahead of the marquee fixture, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has said that two best teams are playing in the World Cup 2023 final.

“Definitely, the two best teams are playing in the final. India won all 9 matches in the group stage and then they won the semi-final in style as well. Australia stumbled at the start but they came back strongly to win some games from impossible positions,” Gavaskar told India Today.

While Gavaskar considers as favourites heading into the final, he insisted that one can never write Australia off.

In the league stage of this World Cup, India had defeated Australia by six wickets at Chepauk on October 8.

“Yeah, India are certainly the favorites because of the way they have played. But the Australians can never be written off. We saw the way Glenn Maxwell played. The manner in which he played, he didn’t give up. The love for the country and the drive to try and win something for the country is something that you can never discount as far as the Australians are concerned,” Gavaskar added.

Talking about the semi-finals, India outplayed New Zealand in all facets of the game to register a comprehensive 70-run victory in Mumbai whereas Australia pulled off a nervy three-wicket win over South Africa at the Eden Gardens.
