CWC 2023: “He always scores in Ahmedabad,” Harbhajan expects Shubman Gill to rack up big runs in final

Gill played a brilliant knock of 80 not out in the semi-final against New Zealand.

Shubman Gill | GettyShubman Gill was one of the star performers for India in their World Cup 2023 semi-final win over New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Wednesday (November 15).

Opening the innings, Gill was batting on 79 off 65 balls before he picked up cramps and pulled his hamstring. He went off the field and returned only in the last over of India’s innings to finish with 80 not out off 66 balls.

With the hosts set to face Australia in the World Cup final in Ahmedabad on Sunday (November 19), former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has predicted Gill to score big runs.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said Ahmedabad is Gill’s favorite ground and tipped the right-hander to make a big mark in the summit clash.

“Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami have been unbelievable. These guys have to perform for just one more game. This is also Shubman Gill's favorite ground and he always scores in Ahmedabad. I predict that he will score big runs in the final,” Harbhajan stated.

According to him, tournament finals are always pressure games and whoever handles the pressure better will lift the World Cup.

“India has to play fearless cricket. Finals are always pressure games. Whoever handles the pressure better will win the game. Australia has won the World Cup in 2003, 2007 and then 2015. This Australian team plays with togetherness in big matches,” Harbhajan added.

Notably, India have been the most dominant side in this World Cup. The Men in Blue defeated all their nine opponents in the league stage to qualify for the semi-final, where they outplayed New Zealand to register a comprehensive 70-run victory.

On the other hand, India haven’t won an ICC trophy for the last 10 years. After the Champions Trophy triumph in 2013, the team has lost as many as four ICC event finals and bowed out in the semi-finals on numerous occasions.

It remains to be seen whether Rohit Sharma’s men manage to end the global title drought or not.
