The ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka played in Bengaluru on November 9 is proving to be an exciting one. New Zealand needs to win this match to ensure they stay in race for the semi-finals, while battling possibility of rain later.
New Zealand started well as Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bowl first. Kusal Perera gave a flying start to Sri Lanka with 51 in 28 balls, but the rest of batters just couldn’t withstand the Kiwi bowling.
Apart from Perera, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka reached double figures as New Zealand reduced Sri Lanka to 128/9 at one stage.
During the innings, on the fifth ball of the 24th over Lockie Ferguson managed to hit Dushmantha Chameera on his pads with a full delivery. Despite a huge appeal, the umpire Joel Wilson didn’t budge. But Daryl Mitchell from slips and Glenn Phillips from short-leg looked convinced that it might be out.
Mitchell initially thought the ball hit the ball first, but Phillips told him otherwise and he insisted Kane Williamson took a review.
However, the replays revealed a huge inside edge on to the pads and after watching the same on the big screen, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson, Lockie Ferguson and Mitchell Santner let out a huge laugh and Williamson even hid his face in his hands.
Mitchell looked stunned and disappointed and, on his way, back to his position, patted Phillips on his head, who wore an expression of knowing that he messed up.
