CWC 2023: Shakib Al Hasan ruled out of World Cup with a fractured left index finger

Shakib sustained the injury during the match against Sri Lanka in Delhi on November 6.

Shakib Al Hasan | GettyShakib Al Hasan on Tuesday (November 7) was ruled out of Bangladesh’s remaining World Cup 2023 campaign with a fractured index finger of his left hand.

The Bangladesh captain sustained the injury while batting in his team’s penultimate league stage match against Sri Lanka in Delhi on November 6.

Following the game, an X-ray confirmed a fracture and the all-rounder won’t be able to take part in Bangladesh’s last match of the tournament against Australia in Pune on November 11.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers," Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said, as quoted by ICC.

"He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” he added.

Having lost 6 out of their 8 games, Bangladesh are already out of the World Cup semi-final race. However, they still have a lot to play for in the last league match against Australia considering the 2025 Champions Trophy qualification in mind.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently announced that the top seven teams in the World Cup league stage would qualify for the next Champions Trophy, along with hosts Pakistan. This leaves Bangladesh in a tough spot since they are currently occupying the seventh position on the 10-team points table.

Taking about Shakib’s prowess in this World Cup, the Bangladesh skipper finished the campaign with 186 runs and 9 wickets to his name from seven matches.
