Sri Lanka lost to Bangladesh in their recent ICC World Cup 2023 match which was played in Delhi on November 6. The encounter saw one of the biggest controversies ever as Lankan batter Angelo Mathews became the first batter to be dismissed timed out in international cricket.
The incident happened in the 25th over of the Sri Lankan innings after they had been asked to bat first by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.
Hasan had just dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama, who was out-caught at the boundary. Mathews, who was the next batter, walked to the crease and was getting ready to face the ball when while adjusting his helmet, the strap broke.
Mathews immediately called for a new helmet. While the 12th man ran with a helmet, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan had already appealed for a timed out against Mathews and the latter had to walk back to the pavilion, much to the shock of the entire cricket fraternity.
Mathews had tried to plead his case by showing the helmet to the on-field officials and even Shakib himself. But the Bangladeshi captain refused to take back the appeal and the former Sri Lankan captain became the first-ever batter to be out in this way in international cricket.
In the aftermath of the match, Angelo Mathews put out a series of posts on X, detailing the time it took for him to come out of the dugout and reach the crease and then call for a new helmet. He shared several screenshots and even a video that showed the timer at the top.
In his latest post, Mathews shared a video in which the official broadcasters of the ICC World Cup 2023 show the timer on the screen from the time Samarawickrama got out and Mathews reached the crease.
Mathews said: “I rest my case! Here you go you decide”
