CWC 2023: WATCH- Angelo Mathews’ epic 'time' taunt to Shakib Al Hasan after getting his wicket

Earlier Shakib had refused to take back his appeal for Mathews' timed out dismissal.

Angelo Mathews and Shakib Al Hasan | GettySri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews got his revenge as he dismissed Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan in the recent ICC World Cup 2023 match which was played in Delhi on November 6. Earlier, Mathews earned an unwanted record of becoming the first batter ever to be dismissed timed out.

Sri Lanka was asked to bat first by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan who had won the toss. Thanks to Charith Asalanka’s 108 and 41 each from Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama, Sri Lanka posted 279 runs.

During the 25th over of Lankan innings, Angelo Mathews had walked out to bat after Shakib Al Hasan had dismissed Samarawickarama.

As he was readying himself to take the strike, while adjusting his helmet, the strap broke and Mathews promptly signaled for a replacement rather than facing bowler Shakib Al Hasan.

Though the substitute fielder ran onto the field with a new helmet, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for timed out with umpire Marais Erasmus.

Mathews was seen having an intense conversation with umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, indicating that he was experiencing a problem with the helmet strap.

He also approached Shakib, who refused to withdraw his appeal, forcing the Sri Lankan cricketer to leave the field in disgust and anger. Mathews became the first batter to be dismissed timed out in international cricket.

In reply, Bangladesh did well in the chase with Najmul Hossain Shanto making 90 and Shakib Al Hasan making 82 runs. However, fate had another trick up its sleeve as Angelo Mathews avenged himself by removing Shakib Al Hasan in the 32nd over of the match.

Charith Asalanka caught Shakib, who was batting at 82 off 65 balls, as he got a leading edge while trying to force the ball to the leg side.

Mathews instantly pointed to his watch and made the time gesture, mocking Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan's actions in the first innings. Shakib Al Hasan went away with his head down, not responding to the taunt.
