Mohammad Shami had a gem for the South African side who were routed by India in the recent ICC World Cup 2023 match which was played in Kolkata on November 5. India won the game by 243 runs, inflicting the biggest defeat ever on Proteas in ODIs.
India batted first after winning the toss and posted 326/5 in 50 overs with Virat Kohli top-scoring with 101*. Shreyas Iyer made 77 and Rohit Sharma gave a fiery start with 40 runs at the top.
In response, South Africa was blown away on a dicey pitch for 83 runs with Ravindra Jadeja starring with 5/33 and Mohammed Siraj taking 3 wickets.
South Africa had been in scintillating form in this World Cup, recording the highest-ever CWC total of 428 runs against Sri Lanka. They also scored 350 plus runs thrice apart from that record total.
Speaking to the host broadcasters after India handed South Africa their biggest World Cup defeat, Mohammed Shami took a light-hearted jibe at the Proteas.
"Har baar 400 paar karne waalon ka haal dekko (look at the condition of the team that scored 400-plus in every match)," Shami said during his interaction with Star Sports.
Notably, India became only the second side in World Cup history after Sri Lanka to bowl out the opposition for less than 100 twice in a single edition.
