This encounter is being played in Tendulkar’s home ground in Mumbai on November 2, 2023.

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and chose to bowl first. He also revealed that Dushan Hemantha was included in the playing XI in place of Dhananjaya de Silva. India came into the match with the same XI.

Rohit Sharma was the first wicket to fall on the second ball of the first over. He had hit the first ball for a four but was bowled by Dilshan Madushanka on the next ball.

Shubman Gill was then joined by Virat Kohli at the crease. Kohli survived some close calls as he was also dropped by Dushmantha Chameera off his bowling. But once he settled in, Kohli completed a run-a-ball 50.

During this knock, Kohli became the third Indian batter after Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma to score 1000 runs in ODIs in 2023. He also became the fourth batter after Rohit, Gill, and Pathum Nissanka to reach the 1000-run mark in the 50-over format this year.

However, he broke a huge record held by Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar had scored 1000 runs in ODIs in a calender year 7 times in his illustrious career. But Kohli broke that record by doing so for the 8th time in his own brilliant career.

Sachin Tendulkar scored 1000 runs in ODIs in a year in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2007. On the other hand, Kohli has achieved the same feat in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023.

Virat Kohli is the second-highest run-getter in this ongoing CWC 2023, behind South Africa’s Quinton de Kock.
