CWC 2023: WATCH- Dharamshala crowd chants “Shami, Shami” after the pacer takes fifer in his first match in World Cup

Mohammad Shami won the Player of the Match as well  | GettyIndia pacer Mohammad Shami was the star of Men in Blue’s fifth straight win in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2023 tournament. India defeated New Zealand in Dharamshala on Sunday, October 22 to extend their winning run to five wins in five matches.

New Zealand was asked to bat first by Rohit Sharma. Daryl Mitchell (130) and Rachin Ravindra (75) added 159 runs for third wicket to bolster New Zealand’s final total to 273 runs. In reply, Rohit Sharma with 46 gave a flying start to India which was continued by Virat Kohli, who made a sublime 95 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja (39*) and Shreyas Iyer (33) also contributed as New Zealand made life difficult for India in the chase. It was only due to Virat Kohli that India registered a brilliant 4-wicket win in 48 overs.

With the ball, for India, Mohammad Shami shined with 5/54. This also made him the first Indian bowler with more than one fifer in Cricket World Cups.

As Shami returned to his fielding potion near the boundary, the crowd in Dharamsala erupted in joy and started chanting 'Shami, Shami' in appreciation of the pacer’s brilliant effort that earned him the Player of the Match award.
