The 17th match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 between India and Bangladesh turned out to be a lopsided affair as the hosts thrashed the Tigers by seven wickets at MCA Stadium in Pune on Thursday (October 19).

Asked to bowl first, India restricted Bangladesh to a below-par 256/8 on a good batting wicket. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja starred with the ball, claiming two wickets by conceding 38 runs in his 10 overs. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (2-41) also returned with a miserly spell.

In reply, the Men in Blue rode on Virat Kohli’s 48th ODI hundred (103 off 97 balls) to overhaul the target with 8.3 overs to spare. The likes of Shubman Gill (53), Rohit Sharma (48) and KL Rahul (34*) also chipped in with vital contributions during the chase.

Two days after the game, a video surfaced on social media, in which some insensitive Indian fans can be seen harassing Bangladesh's superfan Shoaib Ali, fondly known as ‘Tiger Shoaib’. They also tore the Tiger Mascot during the match.

Bangladesh are struggling in the showpiece tournament. The Tigers opened their World Cup campaign with a big win over Afghanistan but went down against England, New Zealand and India in the next three outings.

Currently occupying the seventh spot on the 10-team points table, Bangladesh will next face South Africa in Mumbai on October 24.
