Jasprit Bumrah produced a fantastic spell to script India’s seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Saturday (October 14).
The right-arm quick returned with the figures of 2 for 19 in his seven overs, helping India bundle out Pakistan for a below-par 191 in 42.5 overs. Mohammad Rizwan (49) and Shadab Khan (2) were his victims.
While Bumrah cleaned up Rizwan with a brilliant off-cutter, he bowled a peach of a delivery to hit the top of Shadab’s off stump.
Speaking to broadcasters after the game, Jasprit Bumrah acknowledged the praise he got from Pakistan pace legend Waqar Younis for his match-winning performance.
"I have seen him (Waqar Younis) and Wasim Akram bowl some magical deliveries. So, to get his nod is great," Bumrah said.
Talking about his plan to bowl on this wicket, the Indian pacer stated: "It felt good. You get to analyse the wicket as soon as possible. We knew the wicket was on the slower side, so the hard lengths were the way."
"We were trying to make it as difficult as possible for the batters. When I was young I used to ask a lot of questions, so that has helped me develop a lot of knowledge. I like to read the wickets and try a lot of options," he added.
Commenting on the deliveries to get rid of Rizwan and Shadab, Bumrah said, "I saw Jaddu's ball was turning, so I count my slower ball as a spinner's slower ball."
"I thought that I could make the run-scoring tough, and it worked. There was a little phase in there where there was reverse swing. It was an outswinger (that) I was looking to ball (to Shadab), but there were parts of reverse swing happening."
With this victory, India kept their World Cup winning streak against Pakistan intact as they extended the lead to 8-0.
Rohit Sharma and his men will next face Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday (October 19).
