CWC 2023: WATCH – Controversy erupts as TV umpire gives Marcus Stoinis out in a controversial fashion

Stoinis argued with the umpires before walking back to the pavilion.

Marcus Stoinis' dismissal against South Africa | HotStarMarcus Stoinis was given out in controversial fashion during Australia’s World Cup 2023 match against South Africa in Lucknow on Thursday (October 12).

During the 18th over of Australia’s innings, Kagiso Rabada bowled a length delivery sliding down leg and Stoinis tried to play it fine. The ball went through to the keeper and the Proteas made a huge appeal, which was turned down by the on-field umpire.

However, South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma opted for DRS. There was a spike on UltraEdge and the third umpire overturned the on-field call to give Stoinis out, but the replays showed the spike occurring from the ball hitting the glove that was not in contact with the bat.

As per the ICC rules, if the batter hits the ball with the glove when the glove is in contact with the bat then the striker is out.

Marcus Stoinis was left shocked by the decision. The Australian all-rounder argued his case to both umpires and Bavuma before walking back to the pavilion.

Earlier in the Australian innings, Steve Smith’s LBW dismissal also created a stir on social media. It looked like that the ball would go down leg-side but Hawkeye showed three reds, much to the dismay of the Australian fans and Smith.
