Team India have started a trend of giving the best fielder award in the ongoing World Cup. The Men in Blue have played two games in the showpiece tournament so far and won both of them comprehensively.
While Virat Kohli was honoured with the best fielder award after India’s six-wicket win over Australia at Chepauk, Shardul Thakur was declared winner for the same award following the team’s eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday (October 11).
In a video shared by BCCI on its official website, Kohli can be seen handing over the honour to Shardul for his stunning catch to dismiss Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
“The catch was at a crucial period because Hardik took a chance bowling a bouncer and we needed a wicket at that stage. Very happy to convert the catch. I have been part of this team for a few years now and I know the boys really well. I am comfortable in this dressing room and we have created an atmosphere where there is no such things as seniors and juniors. Everyone has gelled in so well that you don’t feel nervousness here,” Shardul Thakur said in the video.
Coming to the match, India outclassed Afghanistan in all departments of the game to register their second successive victory in the quadrennial event.
Riding on Jasprit Bumrah’s four-wicket haul (4/39), India restricted Afghanistan to 272/8 in 50 overs after being asked to bowl first.
In reply, the Men in Blue rode on Rohit Sharma’s whirlwind century (131 off 84 balls) and handy contributions from Virat Kohli (55*) and Ishan Kishan (47) to overhaul the target with 15 overs to spare.
India’s next match is scheduled against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Saturday (October 14).
