CWC 2023: BCCI provides medical update on Shubman Gill’s illness

Shubman Gill contracted dengue and missed India's opening match of World cup vs. Australia.

Shubman Gill | XThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given an update on the illness of opening batter Shubman Gill who missed India’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 opening match against Australia in Chennai.

Shubman Gill, who is the leading run-getter in ODIs in 2023, contracted dengue during the warm-up matches for the CWC 2023 tournament. This led to him missing the opening match against Australia on Sunday, which India won by 6 wickets.

Ishan Kishan had replaced Gill in the opening match and scored a golden duck on his World Cup debut.

There were rumors that Gill would travel to Delhi for the second match of the Indian team which is against Afghanistan on October 11. However, BCCI, in their latest update has quashed those rumors. They confirmed that Gill will remain in Chennai under the supervision of the medical team.

The statement also confirmed that Gill will miss India’s second World Cup fixture in Delhi as well.

Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” the BCCI statement read.
