CWC 2023: Shubman Gill down with dengue; might miss India’s World Cup opener against Australia- Reports

India to play Australia in their CWC opener in Chennai on October 8.

Ishan Kishan | GettyIndia opener Shubman Gill is not well and might miss the team’s Cricket World Cup 2023 opening match against Australia. This encounter will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, also known as Chepauk on October 8.

Shubman Gill was under the weather and didn’t attend India's training sessions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.

"He is under the weather. The medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hoping he gets better soon,” an official update from BCCI said, as per ESPNCricinfo.

However, ESPNCricinfo confirmed that Shubman Gill has contracted dengue and is in doubt for the Australia encounter in Chennai. As per reports, Gill is already undergoing treatment for dengue and will undergo another round of tests on Friday before a final call is taken on his availability for the Australia match.

Gill is the leading run-getter in ODIs this year with 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. In his last four ODIs, he smashed two centuries and a half-century, two of those knocks coming against Sunday's opponents, Australia.

In case, Gill is unable to play, India has the option of opening with Ishan Kishan alongside captain Rohit Sharma. Kishan has three half-centuries in five ODIs as an opener this year. Though he has batted in the middle order since the Asia Cup, he scored an impressive 82 against Pakistan from No. 5 in the Asia Cup.

India can also opt for KL Rahul to open, who in 43 innings at the top, has scored 915 runs at an average of 43.57.
