Jonty’s run-out of Inzamam faced stiff competition from 31 others iconic moments.

Jonty Rhodes run-out of Inzamam | ICCIn the build-up to the Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, starting on October 5, the International Cricket Council (ICC) conducted a fans poll for the single greatest moment in the World Cup history.

The pole began on September 14 and the ICC gave the fans a choice of 32 memorable moments from the tournament's history.

After two weeks of voting, South Africa legend Jonty Rhodes' acrobatic effort to effect a flying run-out of former Pakistan batter Inzamam-ul-Haq in the 1992 edition has been declared the single Greatest Moment in the Men's Cricket World Cup.

Jonty’s iconic run-out of Inzamam faced stiff competition from 31 others that have been etched in the memories of cricket fans, including Ben Stokes' deflection in the 2019 World Cup, Kapil Dev's running catch in the 1983 Final, Sachin Tendulkar's onslaught against Pakistan in 2003, among many others.

Having reached the final bracket, Jonty's run-out was up against MS Dhoni's historic six that won India the final of the 2011 World Cup but the former’s fielding effort trumped the Indian legend’s heroics.

After the announcement by the ICC, Jonty Rhodes took to social media platform X and wrote: “Players work so hard at refining their skill-sets so that they become habit and part of your subconscious movements. I loved my fielding, even at school, and had never done this dive into the stumps before 1992, and never did it again after that. Just seemed right at the time, never thought about it, until it happened.”

Jonty also asked his followers which fielder could pull off something similar in the 2023 edition of World Cup.

“Who do you think will do something incredible in the field this @cricketworldcup?” he added.

Defending champions England will face New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
