Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar backed the veteran off-spinner R Ashwin to replace Akshar Patel in India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 if the all-rounder isn’t fit enough for the mega event.

Ashwin was recalled to Team India after nearly two years as a backup for injured Akshar Patel and delivered a stunning performance, taking four scalps in two ODIs against Australia. However, Ashwin was dropped for Washington Sundar for the third and final ODI against Australia.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar said that Ashwin booked his place in India’s CWC 2023 squad with his comeback show, and he strongly believes that the off-spinner should be picked ahead of Sundar if Akshar fails to recover completely for the showpiece event.

Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports, “The way he has bowled in the last two matches, I think he has made the cut for the World Cup squad. If there is even a hint of doubt on Axar Patel's fitness, whether he'll be completely fit for the entire World Cup; because any injury can be a recurring one and he needs to be careful.”

The former Indian captain continued, “If the team management think they can't take that chance with Akshar because it is the World Cup and everyone wants their squad to be 100 percent fit; so if there are any doubts then Ashwin could make a comeback.”

Gavaskar signed off by saying, “Ashwin has bowled exceptionally well in the last 3-4 overs he bowled in Mohali, then the way he utilised the carrom ball in Indore. So, if there are any doubts on Axar, Ashwin will come back into the team.”
