CWC 2023: BCCI likely to pick India's ODI World Cup squad on September 3, standby players likely to be included – Report

ICC has set September 5 as deadline for teams to name their provisional World Cup squads.

Indian cricket team | GettyBoard of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce India’s squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 on September 3, India Today reported.

The 15-member squad for the showpiece tournament is set to be unveiled two days before the deadline to name the provisional squads.

It's noteworthy that India have the flexibility to make adjustments to their provisional squad until September 28, which is seven days before the start of the ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad.

After the Asia Cup 2023, India will host Australia in a three-match ODI series from September 21 to September 27.

As per the report, India are likely to have standby players in their provisional squad, considering the uncertainty over the fitness of some key players like KL Rahul.

Last week, the BCCI men's selection committee picked India’s 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023, slated to be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan from August 30 to September 17.

While KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer made a return to the team after a lengthy injury hiatus, Sanju Samson was picked just as a backup option and promising left-hander Tilak Varma earned his maiden ODI call-up.

While announcing the squad, India chief selector Ajit Agarkar also told media that Rahul has picked up a fresh niggle, which might rule him out of the first few matches of Asia Cup.

It remains to be seen who will get the axe in the provisional World Cup squad as India don't have enough competitive matches to give opportunities for players to stake their claim.

The Men in Blue will begin their Asia Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele on September 2, while they will face Australia in their World Cup opener at Chepauk on October 8.
