The dates were decided upon at the ICC board meeting in Ahmedabad in May, according to an ESPNCricinfo report, and the specifics will be verified at the ICC's AGM in Edinburgh in July.

It is anticipated that the majority of the matches—at least 41 of the 54 games—will take place in South Africa's eight venues, with Zimbabwe hosting eight to ten games and Namibia hosting three.

Additionally, Victoria Falls will join Harare Sports Club and Queens in Bulawayo, giving Zimbabwe three venues instead of the initial two. After it is finished later this year, the Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium will stage domestic cricket matches prior to its formal opening in May of next year.

Although South Africa has subsequently hosted the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2009 Champions Trophy, and the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup, the 2027 ODI World Cup will be the first in Africa since the 2003 competition.

With two groups of seven teams each, the tournament structure will revert to 14-team action. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage. South Africa and Zimbabwe have qualified for the World Cup as full members, but Namibia will have to go through the qualification process.

The 2027 World Cup will also be the inaugural ICC event of the 2027-2031 Future Tours Programme (FTP), which is scheduled to be finalized at ICC meetings in Hong Kong later this year and regulates bilateral international engagements between sides.
