After winning the Women's World Cup on Sunday, November 2, the Indian team erupted into wild celebrations. Joy and relief filled the DY Patil Stadium as they celebrated their close victory over Laura Wolvaardt's South Africa far into the night.
For the first time, the Indian players gathered around the center wicket to perform their team anthem. The occasion held particular significance because, years prior, Jemimah Rodrigues had pledged that India would have a team anthem following their victory in a global competition. That promise was ultimately kept on Sunday night.
“We decided almost four years ago that we would only reveal our team song when we win the World Cup. And tonight is the night," Jemimah Rodrigues said via a BCCI video.
Here is the song:
“Team India, Team India,
Karde sabki hawa tight,
Team India is here to fight.
Koi na leta humko light,
Our future is bright.
Chand pe chalenge, sath me uthenge,
Hum hai Team India, hum sath me jitenge.
Na lega koi panga, kar denge hum danga.
Rahega sabse upar, humara tiranga.
Hum hai Team India, hum hai Team India, hum hai Team India.”
The BCCI video showed the Indian team players singing the song and dancing with the World Cup trophy at the centre of the pitch.
