Jemimah Rodrigues was the star of India’s world record win over Australia in the second semi-final of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 at the DY Patil Stadium on October 30. Australia batted first after winning the toss and posted a huge 338 runs, with Phoebe Litchfield scoring 119.
India lost openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana cheaply, but then Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur added 167 runs for the third wicket. Harmanpreet Kaur fell for 89 runs, but Rodrigues continued on.
She was at the end, unbeaten on 127 with 14 fours to her name, and emotionally broke down as soon as India won the game with 9 balls remaining and 5 wickets in hand. India’s chase of 338 runs was a world record chase in Women’s ODIs and the first time India chased anything over 200 in World Cups.
After the great triumph in front of a crowded arena, Jemimah couldn't hold back her tears and broke down, only to be consoled by the rest of her team. She was even spotted putting her hands together and saying, "Thank you."
Soon after receiving her Player of the Match award, Jemimah approached her family for an interaction, and she burst into tears again, but this time they were happy tears. She hugged her father, who kept a stony expression.
“Look at the emotions as well for Jemimah. It has been a tough one, a little bit of an anxiety-ridden one. It was great to see how she put her heart on her sleeve,” said broadcaster Mayanti Langer as she described the entire sequence of events.
