India and Sri Lanka are due to square off in the Asia Cup final on September 17.

Washington Sundar | GettyAhead of the Asia Cup 2023 final, Washington Sundar is set to link up with the Indian squad in Colombo, Cricbuzz reported.

The Men in Blue are due to face Sri Lanka in the final of the continental tournament at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday (September 17).

According to the report, Sundar has been called in as cover for spin all-rounder Akshar Patel, who picked up niggles during India’s last Super-4 match against Bangladesh on Friday (September 15).

While the extent of Akshar’s injuries is not known, there is some doubt over his availability for the summit clash. The southpaw copped a few blows during his 42-run knock versus Bangladesh.

Last month, Sundar was named in India’s squad for the Asian Games, slated to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8. He is currently in Bengaluru and is likely to rejoin the Asian Games camp after the Asia Cup final.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out of the Asia Cup final due to a hamstring injury suffered during the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Super-4 match on Thursday (September 14).

Theekshana has been replaced by Sahan Arachchige in the squad.

"The MRI scan is showing a tear - not a big tear," Professor Arjuna de Silva, chair of SLC medical committee was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. "Clinically Theekshana is okay though. He's moving around and not feeling too much pain. He'll definitely be ready for the World Cup. Actually if we didn't have a World Cup coming up, we would have somehow tried to get him ready for tomorrow's match. But we don't want to take that risk. "

Sri Lanka have been struggling with injuries to key players lately, with pacer Dushmantha Chameera and leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga missing out on the Asia Cup.
