Sri Lanka extended their record winning streak in ODIs to 13, as they beat Bangladesh by 21 runs in the second match of the Super-4 stage in the Asia Cup 2023. This is now the second-longest streak in the history of Men's ODIs.
Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl first at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Pathum Nissanka (40) and Kusal Mendis (50) provided a fine foundation after Dimuth Karunaratne fell early for 18. Sadeera Samarawickrama then continued his great run of form with 93, his career-best in ODIs. Sri Lanka eventually finished with 257/9, as Bangladesh seamers Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud took three wickets apiece.
In reply, Bangladesh kept losing wickets regularly, but Towhid Hridoy batted superbly to keep his team in the chase, however his brilliant 82-run innings couldn't prove to be enough with little support and the increasing required run-rate. Bangladesh were bowled out for 236 in the 49th over, which left them on the brink of elimination. Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana and Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka took three wickets each.
Cricket fraternity hailed the Sri Lankan team as their winning streak extended to 13, the second-longest in the history of Men's ODIs.
