Asia Cup 2023: “They have most lethal new-ball attack in the game,” Gavaskar’s rich compliment to Pakistan pace battery

Pakistan pacers are having a great time in the ongoing Asia Cup.

Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah | GettyPakistan are having a great time in the ongoing Asia Cup. In the group-stage, the Men in Green registered a crushing 238-run victory over Nepal while their marquee encounter against India was abandoned due to rain.

In the first game of the Super-4 round, the Babar Azam-led side thrashed Bangladesh by seven wickets to go one step closer towards the final.

The main reason behind Pakistan’s success in the continental tournament has been the performances of their fast bowlers.

The pace troika of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf has troubled all the opposition batters they have faced so far. While Rauf is the leading wicket-taker in the competition so far with nine scalps to his name, Shaheen and Naseem have claimed seven wickets each.

Impressed with their exploits, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has said that Pakistan have the best new-ball attack in the game.

“At one point of time it was Australia and Pakistan probably shared that number 1 and number 2 spot because Pakistan have always had top-class new-ball bowlers. But at this point of time, they have the most lethal new-ball attack in the game,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“They have a left-arm, right-arm combination. They can move the ball both ways at good pace. So, it’s not easy for any batter to get aggressive against them from the word go,” he added.

Pakistan will next face arch-rivals India at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday (September 10).

In the group-stage, Pakistan’s pacers claimed all 10 wickets when they bowled out India for 266 in 48.5 overs. However, the match was called off without a ball being bowled in the second innings due to incessant drizzle.
