Asia Cup 2022: Arshdeep Singh’s Wikipedia page showed ‘Khalistan’ entries; IT ministry summons executives- Report

Arshdeep Singh was trolled and abused heavily after his drop catch and India's loss | GettyThe Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (IT) ministry has reportedly summoned the executives of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia after Khalistan entries and links were visible on Indian cricketer Arshdeep Singh’s page on the website.

This happened after India lost to Pakistan in the recent Asia cup 2022 game on Sept 4 in Dubai. Arshdeep Singh was brutally trolled by fans on social media as he had dropped an easy catch during a tense situation, which took the game away from India’s hold, resulting in a 5-wicket defeat at Dubai International Stadium.

The 23-year-old was subjected to abuse while his page entry was changed to reflect the Khalistan association.

However, as per reports of India Today, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology summoned Wikipedia executives in India to seek an explanation over the matter on Monday. The central government is of the opinion that the changes made to Arshdeep’s Wikipedia bio could cause disharmony in India.

The report also claimed that the entries read that Arshdeep was selected to play for the ‘Khalistani national cricket team’. later, the page was restored.

According to Hindustan Times, the changes were made after India’s loss to Pakistan with the word India replaced by Khalistan at numerous places on the page. Also, the name of the cricketer was changed twice while several changes were made to his cricket stats.

The report further disclosed the user’s IP address, citing the version history for Singh’s page, which was allocated to the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), Pakistan’s national telecoms provider (the equivalent of India’s BSNL). The address mentioned is – ‘39.41.171.125’.

Arshdeep Singh bowled very well in the last over when he had 7 runs to defend and even picked a wicket but Pakistan won regardless by 5 wickets.
