Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir had slammed India batters Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant for their irresponsible innings in the recent loss to Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 Super 4s encounter on Sept 4 in Dubai.
Suryakumar Yadav has shown his batting talent to the entire world ever since he made his debut for India in limited overs cricket, but when it comes to shining on the big occasion, he is yet to make that kind of impact with the bat.
The right-hander turned heads with his brilliant batting against Hong Kong, but he failed to score runs during extreme pressure situations against Pakistan, as he fell for 18 and 13 in his two outings in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Whereas Rishabh Pant also failed to perform on the big stage, and Team India most likely fell a few runs short, resulting in a heartbreaking 5-wicket defeat in a Super Four match on Sunday.
After India's loss, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who is part of the Star Sports broadcasting team for Asia Cup 2022, expressed his disappointment over Pant and Suryakumar’s failure to score runs against Pakistan.
He said they should learn from Kohli, who scored 60 off 44 balls against Pakistan, on how to score runs under pressure in situations like Sunday.
Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports: “See, I like a flexible batting lineup. You can have your set openers, but you need to have flexible No.3 or 4. Yes, Virat has got runs today, the kind of form Suryakumar Yadav is in, once you kind of get that start, get that tempo, you can probably promote Suryakumar Yadav at No.3, and then probably keep going.
Virat batted brilliantly today, he is going to get better from here on. One thing is these guys like Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant need to learn from Virat Kohli is the way he runs between the wickets.”
He added, “Not every time, you will be able to hit those big shots but the difference between Virat Kohli and the rest of the guys, Surya might have more shots than Virat Kohli, but Virat is never under pressure because of the way he runs, the way he converts ones into twos.
Suryakumar, Deepak Hooda, and Rishabh Pant might not be able to do it, but they need to learn from Virat Kohli, how important it is under pressure in big games, where you are put in pressure and whether you are able to play that risk-free cricket and still get those 10-11 runs per over.”
