Asia Cup 2022: Bangladesh announce 17-member squad for Asia Cup; Shakib Al Hasan returns as T20I captain

Bangladesh will open their Asia Cup 2022 campaign against Afghanistan on August 30.

Shakib Al Hasan has been appointed captain at least until the T20 World Cup | GettyBangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday (August 13) announced a 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2022 while announcing their captain.

Shakib Al Hasan returns as the captain of the Bangladesh T20I team. The star all-rounder has been named the skipper at least until the T20 World Cup later this year. His fresh stint begins with the Asia Cup, slated to be held in the UAE from August 27 to September 11.

Bangladesh also made various changes in their squad for the multi-nation tournament, with Liton Das ruled out of the competition owing to injuries while Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman, Ebadat Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin are set to make their comeback.

On the other hand, the likes of Munim Shahriar, Nazmul Hossain and Shoriful Islam failed to make the cut.

"Shakib al Hasan is the captain till the upcoming T20 WC," BCB cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"He admitted that he made a mistake (signing the deal with Betwinner News) and he said that won't make any further mistake and we are hopeful," he added.

The deadline for announcing the Asia Cup 2022 squad was set for August 8. However, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had granted BCB an extension in the deadline for picking their squad due to several instances of injury.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ebadot Hossain, Parvez Hossain Emon, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Taskin Ahmed.
