Former India keeper Saba Karim has reacted to the selection of fast bowler Avesh Khan in the Indian Asia Cup 2022 squad and said that team management will have a plan for him and won't abandon him if he falters in the big tournament.

Avesh, who leaked 54 runs in just six overs on his ODI debut didn't have a great time in the two T20 matches he played in the series against West Indies registering figures of 1/31 (2.2 overs) and 0/47 (3 overs). But in the fourth T20I, he returned figures of 2/17 and earned the Player of the Match award as well.

Saba Karim was asked whether Mohammad Shami should’ve been picked in India’s Asia Cup squad on the Sports18 show, 'Sports Over the Top'.

He said: "I feel once you have invested in youngsters like Avesh Khan, you possibly can't leave them out to be barbecued. Such youngsters haven't done anything wrong. I can understand Mohammad Shami on current form is a strong bet, more so with Jasprit Bumrah out due to injury, but I just feel that the selectors want to have that kind of security and they want to persist with the youngsters in whom they have shown so much of faith.”

Avesh was named alongside Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh in the three-men pace attack indicating that he is still in the T20 World Cup hopefuls. A fit again Deepak Chahar was named as a backup player, while Harshal Patel and Jasprit Bumrah were out injured.

Karim said that the selectors have to be commended for picking a composed team and gave his verdict that it's a solid outfit.

"It is a solid side. It's good to see that they are going ahead with players who have that kind of a buy-in to Rohit Sharma's strategy and his tactics," he further said.
