Ashes 2023: “It just worked out magically,” Stuart Broad on his tactic of flipping bail just before Labuschagne’s dismissal

The incident occurred during the second day's play at The Oval.

Broad flipped the bails at Labuschagne's end to disturb his concentration | ECBThe 2023 edition of Ashes has produced a riveting contest between bat and ball. Besides, the fans have also witnessed some controversial and hilarious moments in the iconic series.

During the second day’s play in the ongoing fifth Ashes at The Oval, a video of another hilarious moment surfaced on social media.

In the video, Veteran England pacer Stuart Broad can be seen doing something unusual which led to Marnus Labuschagne losing his focus and getting out the very next delivery.

Broad walked to Labuschagne’s end and flipped the bails from the stumps, which the batter then touched and set properly. There was no reason why he did that but it disturbed the Australian batter’s concentration, which resulted in him edging the very next ball to Joe Root at slips.

After the day’s play, Stuart Broad took credit for using an Australian tactic against them to produce a positive result for his team.

“I’ve heard it’s an Aussie change of luck thing. I’ve seen Nathan Lyon do it. We had a few play and misses in the morning session and we needed to make a breakthrough and I thought: ‘I’ll have a little change of the bails’”, Broad told reporters about the incident.

“It just worked out pretty magically that he nicked the next ball and Rooty took a great catch,” he continued.

As soon as Labuschagne nicked the delivery, Broad went on to rub it in the face of Usman Khawaja at the other end, exchanging words with him and giving him a pat on the back.

Talking about his conversation with Khawaja out in the middle, the England fast bowler said: “I randomly went and celebrated with Uzzy for some reason. He said: ‘If you touch my bails I’m flipping them straight back.’ So he gave me an immediate warning.”

Coming to the match, England bundled out Australia for 295 on Day 2, conceding a meagre first-innings lead of 12 runs. The hosts would look to set a large target for the visitors and try claiming a 2-2 series draw in the process.
