England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow’s contentious dismissal hogged the spotlight in Australia's win in the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Sunday (July 2).
Just before the lunch break on the final day, Bairstow got out in a bizarre manner. He wandered out of his crease after ducking a bouncer from Cameron Green and Alex Carey stumped him out.
The dismissal has triggered the Spirit of Cricket debate all over again. In the post-match presser, the issue was raised multiple times.
"Do you believe in any such thing as spirit of cricket?" a reporter asked the Australian captain Pat Cummins.
In reply, Cummins said: "Yep". His blunt one-word response led to the report further asking, "Do you think after Baistow's dismissal today, which was within the letter of the law, just putting it out there, are we in danger of seeing Mankads or under-arm bowling later in this series?"
This time around, the visiting skipper came up with another savage answer.
"Ah.. I mean, depends how flat the wickets get. It might be an option to turn to," Cummins retorted.
Talking about the Lord’s Test, Australia won the game by 43 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match Ashes series.
Defending the target of 371 in the final innings, the tourists survived England skipper Ben Stokes’ onslaught (155 off 214) and bundled out the hosts for 327.
The third Test will be held at Headingley from July 6.
