Ashes 2023: “I wasn’t just going to stand by and cop it,” Khawaja opens up on animated exchange with MCC members

The incident happened after Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in the first session on Day 5 at Lord's.

Usman Khawaja and David Warner exchanged words with members in long room | ScreengrabThe fifth and final day's play in the second Ashes Test at Lord's witnessed some drama as England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was stumped by his Australian counterpart Alex Carey in bizarre circumstances.

After a heated morning session on Sunday (July 2), the Australian players were booed by the crowd at the Home of Cricket.

Moreover, visiting openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner were also confronted by some MCC members in Lord’s long room when they were walking towards the dressing room at Lunch break.

In a video doing rounds on social media, Khawaja and Warner can be seen having animated discussions with members in the long room before security guards intervened to prevent any unpleasant incident.

After the game, Khawaja opened up on the episode, saying that the MCC members were pretty disrespectful towards him and his teammates.

“It was really disappointing. Some of the stuff that was coming out of the members’ mouths was really disappointing. I wasn’t just going to stand by and cop it, so I just talked to a few of them,” said Khawaja while speaking to Channel 9.

“A few of them were throwing out some pretty big allegations, and I just called them up on it. It was pretty disrespectful to be honest. I was expecting a lot better from the members,” he added.

Following the incident, MCC issued a statement, apologizing to the Australian men's cricket team.

“We have unreservedly apologised to the Australian Team and will deal with any Member who has not maintained the standard we expect through our disciplinary processes. It was not necessary to eject anyone from the ground and I am pleased to say that there was no repeat of this as the players resumed the field for this afternoon’s session," MCC's statement read.

Coming to the Lord’s Test, Australia won the game by 43 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match Ashes series.

Defending the target of 371 in the final innings, the tourists survived England skipper Ben Stokes’ onslaught (155 off 214) to bundle out the hosts for 327.

The third Ashes Test will be held at Headingley from July 6.
