Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is likely to make a comeback to the Test arena in the second and final Test against Sri Lanka to be played at the Galle International Stadium on Friday (July 8).

Maxwell was not featured in Australia’s playing XI during their 10-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the first, but Test captain Pat Cummins hinted at giving a chance to the star all-rounder in the second Test.

Cummins said that he would announce Australia’s playing XI at the toss in the second Test after examining the pitch at Galle, as it looks different from the one for the opening Test.

He also insisted that it would be hard to leave Mitchell Starc out for the final Test against Sri Lanka.

Pat Cummins told reporters: “Same 12 (as in the last match), we are going to have a look at the wicket today, maybe in the morning as well, and see what they end up doing with it.”

Speaking about the pitch, the skipper said: “The wicket may be different to last week. Last week we probably didn't need two quicks but we know Mitchell Starc's class, so wait and see.”

Meanwhile, Cummins said that Maxwell will come in "as a spinning all-rounder at (number) eight" if he is picked.

Notably, Australia’s spin specialist Nathan Lyon scalped 9 wickets in the first Test against Sri Lanka.
