New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson on Wednesday (22nd June) said that it was frustrating for him to miss the second Test in Trent Bridge due to COVID-19.

Williamson will be back in the action for New Zealand against England in the third Test in Leeds. The Black Caps skipper missed the second match after he contracted the coronavirus.

In his absence, Tom Latham captained New Zealand at Trent Bridge and the visitors lost the game by 5 wickets to go 2-0 down in the series. With the series already being clinched by England, the visitors would be looking to avoid the whitewash and end the series on a high.

Speaking ahead of the third Test, Kane Williamson said that it was frustrating for him to miss the second Test due to COVID-19 but he feels good to be back. He talked about the Trent Bridge match and highlighted how he observed things while watching it on TV.

“It was obviously pretty frustrating to miss the last Test through Covid but it’s great to be back in the fold. Didn’t have too much else to do. It was a Test where both teams put their front foot forward, played some shots, it was fast-scoring and in the balance like the first Test.

“I don’t shout at the TV. I watch and observe, it’s always interesting seeing it from a different perspective, although it wasn’t my preferable place to be,” ESPNCricinfo quoted Kane Williamson as saying.

Williamson lauded Jonny Bairstow for his knock in the second Test and also applauded England for their aggressive mindset.

“It was interesting to watch and connect from the other side a little bit. There was a lot of effort that went into the match. It was an amazing knock from Jonny, and that’s cricket. You do have to applaud the quality England have come in with,” he said.

Williamson also expressed his desire to continue as the skipper of the New Zealand team, saying that their main focus is to become the better side.

“The picture of leadership in this side is something I’m very passionate about. Certainly, I love playing for my country and there are a number of leaders in this team that share that passion to take steps forward and become a better side,” he said.
