England completed a win by five wickets over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's on Sunday (June 5) to help the hosts take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chasing 277 to win in the fourth innings of the match, England resumed Day 4 at 216/5 with Joe Root and Ben Foakes at the crease. The duo ensured there were no hiccups as Root (115*) and Foakes (32*) completed the chase with an unbeaten 120-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
New Zealand looked well set to snatch a win after reducing England to 69/4 in the second innings but Root, Foakes and skipper Ben Stokes (54) batted very responsibly to take the team to victory.
Root, who was playing under the captaincy of Stokes for the first time since resigning as England Test captain, scored his 26th Test century and also completed 10,000 runs in Test cricket, becoming the second England batter after Sir Alastair Cook to join the elite club. This was also his first century in the fourth innings of a Test match and he scored the winning runs to make it even more sweeter.
