Former Australia wicketkeeper batter Adam Gilchrist gave Alex Carey the Baggy Green cap No.461 as he made his debut in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba. Carey took three catches as he was involved in the dismissals of Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler, and Ollie Robinson.
While handing over the Test cap to Carey, Gilchrist said that he deserves the Baggy Green cap and called his journey from football to cricket 'courageous'. Carey has played in the Australian Football League before starting his cricket career.

"Mate, you deserve this. Rest assured that you deserve this, there is absolutely no way this is given out lightly," Gilchrist said.
"It’s been a courageous journey, you walked away from one journey (playing the Australian Football League) and courageously resumed another dream and here you are fulfilling that dream today. Absolutely brilliant," he added.
Carey got an opportunity in Australia's Ashes squad after Tim Paine took an indefinite mental health break from cricket and made himself unavailable for the Ashes.
The 30-year-old will be tested with the bat when Australia will begin their innings in the ongoing Brisbane Test. Australia are currently in the commanding position after bowling out England on 147 runs in the first innings.
