WTC 2021: Kane Williamson says it was a great feeling to get the job done with Ross Taylor

Williamson and Taylor added 96* runs as NZ beat India by 8 wickets to win the World Test Championship.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson said that winning the World Test Championship (WTC) final was satisfying and to be there with Ross Taylor till the end was quite special. 

New Zealand thumped India by eight wickets in the WTC 2021 Final at Ageas Bowl, Southampton to be crowned as the first World Test Champions.

At the start of the reserve day, the match was evenly poised but the Kiwis removed Indian skipper Virat Kohli along with Cheteshwar Pujara during the first hour and then later bundled out Team India for just 170 runs, setting themselves a target of just 139 runs to chase. 

In the chase, R Ashwin removed both New Zealand openers in quick succession. However, Kane Williamson (52*) along with Ross Taylor (47*) added an unbeaten 96 runs to take New Zealand home and win their first ICC title since the ICC Champions Trophy 2000.

In an interaction with India Today, Kane Williamson said that winning the WTC 2021 final was a moment of satisfaction for him and it was a great feeling to get the job done with Ross Taylor. He admitted that 139 was not a big target but the chase was tricky. 

“Winning the WTC final was a moment of satisfaction and a great feeling to get the job done with Ross Taylor, it was satisfying. The surface throughout the game was very competitive. 

“Things started to happened quicker than expected. In England, it is a normal thing. Chase of 140 was not high but still a tricky one,” Kane Williamson told India today.

Kane Williamson further said that Team India had a ‘fair shot’ of winning the WTC final as they counter-attacked after losing early wickets and with surface offering to bowlers it was an intense situation for New Zealand.
