WTC 2021 Final: Shubman Gill has the temperament to become a great player, says Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar also feels that Gill will have a plenty on centuries to his name.

The Punjab lad might have only played 7 Test matches but has impressed all the fans and cricket experts with his fantastic batting performances.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar is one of them as Gavaskar feels the 21-year-old Gill will become a great player.

He (Gill) has the temperament to become a great player," Gavaskar said while commentating during the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) between India and New Zealand in Southampton.

Gill got a few runs under his belt in the first innings of the WTC final as he along with Rohit Sharma provided Team India with a decent start on Day 2.

The right-hand batsman had a terrific Australia tour as he scored 378 runs including three half-centuries with his stroke-making and temperament delighting experts.

Even though the hundreds have eluded him, Gavaskar is sure that once the youngster hits his maiden ton, plenty more will follow.

The first hundred is always the toughest one because that journey from scoring a half-century to reaching three figures is not that easy.

Batsmen tend to feel settled somewhere around the 70-80 run mark and start taking the bowlers on and lose their wicket in that way. He just needs to get his first hundred and then a lot more will follow,” the 71-year-old said.

As far as the final between India and New Zealand is concerned, the subcontinental giants who were asked to bat first by Kane Williamson have 146 runs on the board at the loss of 3 wickets with skipper Kohli 44*(124) and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane 29*(79) at the crease.

The Indian captain and vice-captain have completed yet another half-century partnership before the play was stopped on Day 2 owing to bad light.
