England skipper Joe Root has equalled the record of the greatest Australian Test batsman, Sir Donald Bradman with scores of 150+ in three consecutive Tests as skipper.
Root has hit a purple patch in 2021 with centuries in all three Tests he has participated in so far. Root scored 228 in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle followed by a score of 186 in the second Test at the same venue.
He led England in the first Test against India in Chennai, which also happens to be his 100th Test match. Root registered a double century for the fifth time in his Test career taking his team well past the 400-run mark on a flat wicket at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Joe Root continued his masterclass well past the 150-run mark but equalled the great Don Bradman when he got there. The Australian was the only cricketer in the world to score more than 150 in three consecutive Tests as captain. He did that in the Ashes of 1937 in Australia with scores of 270, 212 and 169 in the third, fourth and fifth Test of the series respectively.
Joe Root also became the only cricketer to score a double century in his 100th Test match. Ricky Ponting scored hundreds in each innings of his 100th Test but could not go past the 200-run mark. The previous highest run-scorer in the landmark Test was Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq with 184.
