Bangladesh wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim believes that the Tigers have the potential to rise to the top six in the traditional format of the game – Test cricket.

However, the former captain rued that Bangladesh could not achieve the same in the last two decades despite having talented players in the team while raising concerns over his team’s overseas shows.

Bangladesh has had some success and progressed in the limited-overs formats, but when it comes to Test cricket in terms of statistics and field performance, they are far behind and have not been able to find much success on the foreign soil except some success at home in the 20 years.

The Tigers, who have 55 overall rating points, are currently ranked 9th in the latest ICC ranking and are even behind the newcomers Afghanistan (57 rating points), however, the veteran is still optimistic about Bangladesh’s progress in the five-day format.

Mushfiqur was quoted as saying by bdcrictime.com: “I truly believe that there is much more to be achieved as a team. Despite having talented players, we have not been able to achieve that in the last 20 years. But at least at home, our performance is going up.”

Rahim believes that the major concern for the team is to perform well in overseas conditions while saying several challenges are going to come into their way in the future.

He added, “Our concern is to do well outside the country. There are many big challenges ahead. The Test Championship is also a big challenge for us. We have the ability to come in the top six in Tests.”

Mushfiqur signed off by saying, “If there’s no coronavirus, then there would be some important series at home. We had a Test series against New Zealand or Australia. There is also the West Indies. Every team is big, we have beaten two teams in the past. If we can stay in the top-6, then we can see some players in the top ten in the player rankings.”
