SA v ENG 2020: "Wanderers Test could be my last at home," says South Africa's Faf du Plessis

Du Plessis has had a hard time captaining the Proteas in the last 12 months.

Faf du Plessis is probably in the last leg of his Test career and believes that the Wanderers Test could be his last at home. Life has not been easy for Faf du Plessis in the last 12 months or so, but it is even worse when it comes to Test cricket.

The Proteas have looked a pale shadow of their former self as they have lost the previous two-Test series and now have lost the chance of winning one at home against England after being 2-1 down with a Test to go.

The Indians absolutely battered the South Africans at home and sent them packing 3-0. Sri Lanka went to South Africa and won their first Test series in the country. The Proteas haven’t picked up since and have gone down the barrel especially in the longest format.

SA v ENG 2020: 3rd Test- England humiliate South Africa in PE; win by an innings and 53 runs

I have committed until the T20 World Cup. There isn't a lot of Test cricket left this year: one massive Test where we need everyone to be as strong as possible, [and] afterward there is quite a big gap. I have said before, there is an opportunity to release some of the captaincy. Two Test matches in the West Indies [in July], and the rest of the year is white-ball stuff. Most probably after that, Test cricket will be something that won't see me,” Faf du Plessis said after losing the third Test to England.

That's a decision I will make then. For me now it's to be as strong as possible,” he added.

He said, “I don't think that's what's leadership is about. I felt that the team has needed a leader to stand up and guide the ship through a difficult time. If you leave the team when they need you most, that's not my style. I have been under pressure a few times and I've played my best innings under pressure.

I can't leave the team when they need me most. We are in a transition but I can't do it forever. It has been chipping away at your character. For now, that's what we need. I think it will make it worse if I say I'm out,” he explained.

The fourth and final Test between South Africa and England will start on January 24 at Johannesburg. Faf du Plessis would like to lead from the front and level the series 2-2.
