BJ Watling survived a run-out on day three's morning session because of Paine's blunder.

The start of the third day's play at Perth between Australia and New Zealand wasn't a good one for Tim Paine. The Australia captain made a huge mistake in gathering the ball and gave a lifeline to Kiwi batsman BJ Watling. It was an easy chance that was messed up by Paine.

New Zealand were 5 down on 110 when Watling wanted to go for the second run. He was in the middle of the pitch as Ross Taylor called 'No' for another run. In meantime, Nathan Lyon collected the ball and threw it to the keeper's end where BJ Watling was well outside the crease.

Paine had enough time to dislodge the bails as Watling wasn't even in the frame. But to Tim's embarrassment, he missed out on the opportunity and couldn't do anything but regret.

Luckily for him the mistake didn't cost Australia much as Pat Cummins removed Watling soon when their score reached 120. With the kind of form the New Zealand wicket-keeper is in, the run-out fumble could have turned very costly.

Here is the video:

New Zealand was bowled out on just 166 in the first innings. Australia refused to enforce the follow-on and came out to bat in the second innings. They scored 416 in the first innings after winning the toss.
