The umpiring standards in the Ashes 2019 have been questioned because of numerous incorrect decisions. As a result, the umpires Joel Wilson and Chris Gaffaney have been removed from umpiring duties for rest of the Ashes series. There will be two new umpires for the next Test at Manchester.
Fans were disappointed with the string of poor decisions from the on-field umpires. Not to forget, Wilson was under fire after he failed to give Ben Stokes out when England needed two runs and had only one wicket left. The ball was hitting Stokes on his pad, and as replays showed, it was all red.
The replacement named for the fourth Ashes Test is Marais Erasmus and Ruchira Palliyaguruge. The third umpire will be Kumar Dharmasena. In the first Test, Aleem Dar had made inferior decisions. If we go by counts, there were seven wrong decisions between Dar and Wilson on the first day of the Edgbaston Test.
Umpiring has been a major let down in cricket world lately. During World Cup 2019 final, Dharmasena had mistakenly given one extra run to the English team. Eventually, the game tied and the mistake turned out to be very crucial.
Even Decision Review System (DRS) has been under scrutiny for controversial outcomes. Even Stokes termed the DRS as “broken” while stating that the technology got it “completely wrong.”
