Steve Smith, the Australia captain, had issues with England’s Brydon Carse’s sunglasses on day three of the ongoing fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2025-26. Australia has resumed on day three on 166/2.
Travis Head went on to make 163 with 24 fours and one six, and that’s when Steve Smith took over and hammered a century as well. He had walked in with Australia at 234 for three in the 55th over after Michael Neser’s wicket.
He brought up his half-century off 95 balls during the second session on Day 3 and was batting with sharp shot selection, and that’s when something distracted his concentration.
The accused was Brydon Carse’s sunglasses. Carse, the England pacer, was stationed at mid-on and was wearing sunglasses that reflected the bright Sydney sun straight into Smith’s eyes as he batted. The glare temporarily disrupted Smith's focus, causing him to walk down the pitch and make a courteous request.
“Carsey! Can you just turn your glasses around? On the back,” Smith was heard saying on the stump mic.
Carse quickly obeyed, adjusting his sunglasses to the back of his head before the game resumed. The event elicited smiles from both players and supporters, injecting some levity into the hotly contested Ashes match.
