Cricket fraternity reacts as Sri Lanka clinch maiden Women's Asia Cup title by defeating India

Sri Lanka chased down India's target of 166 with eight wickets and as many balls to spare.

Sri Lanka women's team lifted the Asia Cup for the first time | ACCSri Lanka registered an eight-wicket victory over defending champions India to clinch their maiden Women's Asia Cup title in Dambulla on Sunday (July 28).

Opting to bat first, India posted a modest 165/6 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Smriti Mandhana was the top scorer with 60 off 47 balls, while Richa Ghosh (30 off 14) and Jemimah Rodrigues (29 off 16) chipped in with handy contributions.

Kavisha Dilhari picked up two wickets for Sri Lanka while Sachini Nisansala, Chamari Athapaththu and Udeshika Prabodhani returned with one scalp each.

In reply, the hosts lost an early wicket but skipper Chamari's knock 61 off 43 balls brought them back into the game.

Later, Harshitha Samarawickrama played an unbeaten knock of 69 in 51 balls and took her side across the line with eight balls to spare. Apart from them, Dilhari made a vital contribution of 16-ball 30* during the chase.

For their clinical performance in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 final, Chamari Athapaththu and her troops received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on social media platform X.
