Muzumdar was initially in line to become the head coach of the side, but is mostly likely to get the batting coach role with the Indian women.

“The BCCI is in talks with a big name to coach the Indian women’s team. Amol is on the ‘short list’ but he is likely to become the batting coach of the side,” a reliable source told the Times of India.

The new coach, likely to be a reputed name, will get a two-year contract in a crucial period when the Indian women’s team is set to play the T20 World Cup in September-October next year in Bangladesh, followed by the ODI World Cup in India in 2025.

Amol Muzumdar scored 11167 runs in 171 FC matches with 30 centuries and the best score of 260. In 113 List-A matches, he scored 3286 runs with 3 centuries and the best score of 109. He also played 14 T20 matches, scoring 174 runs with one fifty to his name.

Since his retirement, Muzumdar has been involved as coach with age-group sides at the NCA, was head coach of Mumbai until the 2022-23 domestic season, and has been part of the coaching staff at Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and South Africa [for their tour of India in 2019] briefly.

Indian women’s next assignment will be the Asian Games event where they have already qualified for the quarterfinals.
