Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, credited her bowlers for the team’s remarkable performance in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 final against Sri Lanka on Saturday (October 15) at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka Women decided to bat first and India Women read the Sylhet conditions brilliantly to wreak havoc on their batting line-up in the Women's Asia Cup 2022 final. Renuka Singh (3/5), Deepti Sharma (2/13) and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/16) delivered stunning performances with the ball for India, as Sri Lanka could manage only 65/9 in their 20 overs.
In reply, India chased down the paltry total inside 9 overs at the expense of two wickets, thanks to a brilliant fifty from Smriti Mandhana (51*) against Sri Lanka to clinch their 7th Women’s Asia Cup title.
After India won the Women’s Asia Cup 2022, Kaur lauded her bowlers by saying that they pulled off their A-game by reading the playing conditions with precision against Sri Lanka Women.
Harmanpreet Kaur said at the post-match presentation ceremony: “We should credit our bowlers. Our fielding unit was good from ball one and we discussed that we should not give away easy runs. You have to read the wicket and accordingly place the fielders in the right positions. We read the wicket well and positioned fielders accordingly.”
She added, “We were not looking at the scoreboard but only decided our five-over targets. We never thought about what is the total on the board and batted accordingly.”
Meanwhile, Indian all-rounder Deepti played a key role in India’s victory in the Asia Cup 2022, where she finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 13 scalps and won the Player of the Series award.
Speaking about her performance in the tournament, she said: “Really happy with the way we performed as unit from the first game till today. We executed what was discussed in the meeting. I just back my strengths and those things helped me a lot in this tournament,”
She added, “The wickets were slow and before this tournament, I worked a lot on my batting and those sessions really helped me. This win gives us a lot of confidence going into the upcoming series as well.”
