With Jasprit Bumrah battling a back injury that could possibly rule him out of the T20 World Cup 2022, India’s contingent is set to travel with at least two additional pacers as back-up.
According to a report published in Sportstar, Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik on Thursday (October 6) will fly with the squad to Perth, where the Rohit Sharma-led side will train for a week before travelling to Brisbane for its first warm-up match on October 17.
The report also suggests that the team management is uncertain whether Bumrah can be stretched throughout the showpiece event. It will be interesting to see if the star pacer is asked to board the flight for Perth on October 6 and continue his recovery in Australia or report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
Notably, BCCI on Friday (September 30) named Siraj as replacement for Bumrah for the remainder of the three-match T20I series against South Africa.
“Bumrah has sustained a back injury and is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team,” BCCI said in its statement.
Before the first T20I between India and South Africa at Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday (September 28), the BCCI had said that Bumrah was ruled out of the match after complaining of back pain during practice session on Tuesday (September 27).
Meanwhile, news agency PTI on Thursday (September 29) reported that Bumrah has suffered a serious back stress fracture, which will keep him out of action for at least four to six months and he won’t be able to take part in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.
Having missed out on the Asia Cup 2022 due to back injury, Jasprit Bumrah made his comeback to the Indian team against Australia last week in the second T20I, which was held in Nagpur. But after playing the last two T20Is, he picked the same injury again.
