Indian women’s cricketer Deepti Sharma has clarified that England batter Charlie Dean was warned beforehand multiple times before she was run out by the Indian all-rounder during the third and final ODI at Lord’s on Saturday.
In the 44th over of the England chase, Deepti Sharma ran out Charlie Dean who was on 47 and England needed 17 more runs to win the game and save some face in the series which India was leading 2-0.
Dean was left in tears as the third umpire gave her run out and the Indian team celebrated whitewashing England for the first time in their own backyard in ODIs.
This led to a storm on Twitter with multiple former and current England cricketers slamming Deepti and the Indian women’s team for running Dean out and hurting the spirit of cricket.
However, now it is no longer under unfair play as ICC amended its rules, and such a dismissal at the non-striker’s end is now termed as a run-out.
Meanwhile, Deepti Sharma revealed that Charlie Dean had been warned multiple times by the Indian team for venturing out of the crease, and then a plan was formulated to run her out.
"It was a plan, because we had warned her [for leaving the crease early] repeatedly. We did things as per the rules and guidelines. We told the umpires as well, but she was there [outside the crease]. We couldn't do much,” Deepti told reporters on arrival in Kolkata and was quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
A viral Twitter thread by ESPNCricinfo's journalist Peter Della Penna has revealed that throughout the England innings, Charlie Dean moved out of her crease at the non-striker’s end more than 70 times and was dismissed on the 72nd occasion.
He shared several screenshots where Dean can be clearly seen leaving the crease early, some by a margin of 6-12 inches.
